A genus of flowering plants in the dogbane family, Apocynaceae. Some species are familiar as ornamental plants cultivated for their large, colorful flowers. Most species produce yellow flowers.

Allamanda species have been used in systems of traditional medicine for various purposes. A cathartica has been used to treat liver tumors, jaundice, splenomegaly and malaria. In analyses, some species have shown some activity against carcinoma cells, pathogenic fungi and HIV.

This flower plant gives the appearance of being a delicate, finicky plant, but growing Angelonia is actually quite easy. Globe amaranth is an all-time flower-gardening favorite. It seems to have it all; it thrives in hot conditions, it blooms nearly nonstop, the interesting pom-pom flowers are great for cutting and drying, and it attracts butterflies. Plant globe amaranth and then step back to watch it thrive and add continual beauty until frost. It's great in beds, borders, and containers. 

PIt tolerates a variety of soils and moisture levels. It isn't fussy about fertilizer, but be careful not to over fertilize.

SIAM TULIP / CURCUMA ALISMATIFOLIA / SUMMER TULIP

Curcuma alismatifolia, Siam tulip or summer tulip is a tropical plant native to Laos, northern Thailand and Cambodia. Despite its name, it is not related to the tulip, but to the various ginger species such as turmeric. It can grow as an indoor plant, and is also sold as a cut flower.

Pyrostegia venusta is a liana (a vigorous, woody climber) that makes a beautiful ornamental plant with cascades of orange flowers. It is commonly grown in tropical and subtropical areas, as well as in mild Mediterranean climates. The plants form dense masses, growing up trees, on walls or over rocks, and are covered with flowers in the cool, dry season.

Antigonon leptopus is a fast-growing climbing vine that holds via tendrils, and is able to reach 25 ft or more in length. It has cordate (heart shaped), sometimes triangular leaves 2½ to 7½ cm long the flowers are borne in panicles, producing pink or white petals. Prolific seed producer, the seeds float on water, the fruit and seeds are eaten and spread by a wide range of animals such as raccoons and birds. Coral Vine also are one of the favourite flowers for bee keepers.

Bunga Teluki or Carnation, produced sweetly scented; the original natural flower color is bright pinkish-purple, but cultivars of other colors, including red, white, yellow and green, have been developed. Carnations require well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil, and full sun. Colombia is the largest carnation producer in the world. In our land, most are grown in Cameron Highlands but this flower plant can easily find at our nursery in Klang Valley as they can grow throughout the year.

COTTON

Cotton is a natural fibre grown on a plant related to the hibiscus. The seeds are planted and cotton plants grow into green, bushy shrubs about a metre in height. The plants briefly grow pink and cream coloured flowers that once pollinated, drop off and are replaced with “fruit”, better known as cotton bolls. 

Inside each cotton boll is the fluffy white lint that we’re all familiar with, as well as a number of cotton seeds. In Australia the cotton is picked with large mechanical harvesters and sent off to the cotton “gin” for processing. 

During the ginning process, the lint is separated from the seeds and is then pressed into bales and shipped overseas to be spun, dyed, knitted and woven into fabrics like clothes and home furnishings, 

how interesting eh?

This very popular houseplant often goes by the name Corn Plant, or by its official Latin name of Dracaena fragrans (impossible to say without sounding French!), it may also be known as Dracaena massangeana. The genus has several other well-known members that we invite happily into our homes, such as Dracaena Marginata and Dracaena Sandreana all of which are reasonably content to share our living or office space without a lot of fuss.

A succulent herb with cluster of 6-12 swordlike leaves arising from a trunk like stem. The leaves are green on top and purple / violet below. The small white three – petaled flowers are hidden purple bracts.

Tacca chantrieri, the black bat flower, is a species of flowering plant in tthe yam family. Tacca chantrieri is an unusual plant in that it has black flowers. These flowers are somewhat bat-shaped, are up to 12 inches across, and have long 'whiskers' that can grow up to 28 inches. There are ten species in the genus Tacca. One of these, T. integrifolia, is commonly called the "white bat plant." T. integrifolia is similar to T. chantrieri, but has white bracts which are veined purple. T. integrifolia is larger than T. chantrieri, reaching up to four feet in height (almost twice the size of T. chantrieri at a height of 24"-36").

Tacca chantrierei is native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia including Thailand, Malaysia, and southern China: particularly Yunnan Province. They are understory plants, so they prefer shade (at least 60%). They grow best in well-drained soil with good air circulation, but they prefer high humidity, and need a lot of water.

One of the most impressive vines that is very popular in Malaysia, Thailand and other South-East Asia countries. Moderate growth woody climber with clusters of fragrant white flowers, it is easy to care and tolerates wide range of conditions. It can be trained as a compact bush and is good for container culture. Attract butterflies and hummingbirds. This flower is a symbol of grace, charm and beauty of traditional Malay culture. Hence, it was selected as a state flower of the historical city of Malacca.

The mandevilla plant has become a common patio plant, and rightfully so. The brilliant mandevilla flowers add a tropical flair to any landscape. But once you buy a mandevilla vine, you may wonder what you need to do to be successful at growing mandevilla. When you buy your mandevilla vine, chances are good that it’s a lush plant full of flowers. You may wish to transplant it to the ground or into a bigger or more decorative container. Mandevilla flowers need sandy, well-draining soil with plenty of organic material mixed in. A good soil mix for mandevilla plants include two parts peat moss or potting soil to one part builder’s sand.

Combretum indicum, also known as the Chinese honeysuckle or Rangoon creeper, is a vine with red flower clusters and is found in Asia. It is found in many other parts of the world either as a cultivated ornamental or run wild. The plant is used as herbal medicine. Decoctions of the root, seed or fruit can be used as antihelmintic to expel parasitic worms or for alleviating diarrhea. Fruit decoction can also be used for gargling. The fruits are also used to combat nephritis. Leaves can be used to relieve pain caused by fever. Rangoon creeper is found in thickets or secondary forests of the Philippines, India and Malaysia. It has since been cultivated and naturalized in tropical areas.

Cypress vine (Ipomoea quamoclit) is a member of the morning glory family and as such grows very well in our hot weather. It is a tropical plant that is native to Mexico and Central America. It is a lovely vining plant that can grow 20 feet or more in a single season. Cypress Vine has loose, feathery foliage that is covered with hundreds of tiny, tubular flowers. The star shaped flowers can range in color from deep red to almost white. Cypress Vine is a very lovely and very hearty plant that thrives in our climate. It is easy to grow and looks great on a fence, trellis or arbor. If you can tolerate the aggressive growth habit, it will reward you with a beautiful late summer garden full of butterflies and hummingbirds.

Cardinal Climber lives up to its name. The blossoms are a true cardinal red and the vine reaches for whatever it can grab hold of. This is a very graceful, airy vine. It blooms profusely throughout the summer and the red, trumpet-shaped flowers are big favorites of hummingbirds.

Heat and drought tolerant. Easy to grow, requires no attention. Growing vinca from seed is one of those activities that appeal to curious and/or enthusiastic gardeners. Spanish Iris is a clump forming plant that grows 1 metre high by about 1 metre wide. It prefers full sun, is drought and frost tolerant and will accept most soils. If planted in semi-shade it will perform well but the flower spikes will reach out for a sunny spot.

Grass jelly is an Asian dessert commonly served in China, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. In some parts of Asia this dessert is also known as leaf jelly. Generally, manufacturers sell grass jelly in cans, and you typically cut the grass jelly into pieces prior to eating. Grass jelly is made from the leaves and stalks of the mesona chineensis plant.

A 330-g serving of grass jelly contains 44 g of carbohydrates, and 2 g of these carbohydrates come from dietary fiber. The remainder of the carbohydrates come from sugar. Grass jelly is, therefore, higher in dietary sugar and carbohydrates. Each 330-g serving of grass jelly also contains 2 g of protein. Grass jelly does not contain any fat, vitamins or minerals. Because of this, the calorie count of this dessert remains relatively low. However, despite this dessert's lack of fat, the dessert does have a rich flavor that results from the sugar content of the carbohydrates.

Blue Ginger is an exotic perennial from Brazil. It is rapidly becoming the darling of rare plant collectors because of the intense purple-blue colour of its flowers. 

Blue Ginger grows best in shade in warm climates. You can also treat this exotic beauty as an indoor specimen. Keep the soil barely moist, watering only when dry to the touch.  Blue Ginger can reach a height of 2.5 metres with a spread of 1 metre. 

The plant spreads by means of an underground suckering stem, similar to that of bamboo although not as invasive. When planting it is good practice to bury the stems deeper than you would for other plants. This encourages sucker growth and results in a more bushy plant. The more stems there are, the more flowers are produced. Foliage is a lustrous, deep, dark green. 

These plants need to be handled carefully when planting as the flowers and the stems are quite brittle. 

Another lovely feature of this plant is the lack of insect or disease problems.

The flower bracts of the red ginger (Alpinia purpurata) rise out of the masses of the tropical plant's 4 to 6-foot-tall, lush, green foliage. Red ginger might easily become the focal point of your garden. Known also by its Hawaiian name, 'awapuhi-'ula'ula, red ginger grows in many of Hawaii's gardens. Red ginger prefers a warm, moist location in full sun or light shade. Monitor the plants for pests such as aphids and snails. A strong stream of water to dislodge aphids and hand-picking snails is usually sufficient. Avoid disturbing the rhizomes; gingers require at least one full year of undisturbed growth before producing flower bracts and flowers.

The butterfly ginger is one of the nicest gingers for the home landscape because its fragrance is so enjoyable . Pure white, showy flowers emerge from one large bud some time in late spring through summer at the tip of each unbranched stem. Each flower lasts about one day. Several hundred flowers can appear from each bud during a 6-week period. Each stem grows to about 5-feet-tall. These herbaceous perennials spread by underground rhizomes, often forming dense clumps of multiple stems. Large, simple leaves are borne on either side of the thick green stems. Unfortunately, individual flowers do not last after they are cut from the plant.

Invasive in shallow water systems, along streams and in waterlogged areas in the tropics and subtropics. Once established, it is difficult to control because it reproduces vegetatively. Its attractive flowers make it a desirable ornamental plant. The flowers are intensely fragranced, reminiscent of jasmines.

Vanilla planifolia is the source of vanilla, one of the most popular flavours in the world, and one of the most valuable spice crops.  The vanilla orchid Vanilla planifolia grows wild in tropical forests and belongs to one of the oldest and largest groups of flowering plants – the orchids (Orchidaceae). Of all the orchids, the vanillas (members of the Vanilla genus) are the only ones that produce an agriculturally valuable crop, and 95% of the world’s traded vanilla pods are derived from just one species – V. planifolia.  After pollination, vanilla pods develop over four weeks and are then harvested, dried and cured to produce the distinctive flavour we know and love. The pods may be used whole, or split and the tiny seeds scraped out, to infuse cream and custard-based sauces.

Vanilla planifolia is a tropical vine, which can reach a length of over 30 m. It has thick, fleshy stems and greenish flowers that open early in the morning and are pollinated by bees. The flowers have only a slight scent, with no element of the vanilla flavour or aroma. Once pollinated, the ovaries swell and develop into fruits called ‘pods’ similar to long, thin runner beans over a period of four weeks. The pods contain thousands of tiny black seeds.

Its leaves comprise numerous small leaflets divided into three principal groups, each of which is again subdivided into three lesser groups. The edges of the leaflets are finely toothed or serrated. The flowers are small and numerous, yellowish or greenish, are grouped into large, globular umbels which bear pale yellow, oblong fruits. Garden Angelica grows only in damp soil, preferably near rivers or deposits of water.

Roselle plant is a member of the hibiscus family, Malvaceae. The plant is a shrub that produces numerous attractive, pink-coloured hibiscus-like flowers, with a distinctive eye in the centre.

The roselle plant is well known for its fleshy calyces that are used to make a beverage that tastes like Ribena. The drink reportedly possesses anti-hypertensive, diuretic and mild laxative properties, and contains abundant amounts of natural antioxidants such as vitamin C and anthocyanins.

Either fresh roselle or dried calyces are used to make the drink. They are first boiled in water to yield a deep-red and sour beverage, which is then sweetened with sugar and chilled in a refrigerator before serving.

Besides producing calyces for making drinks, the roselle plant has a stem that is laden with calcyes at every node. This can be turned into an alternative cut-flower material for flower arrangements, after the removal of its leaves.  Also, did you know that the young leaves and tender shoots of the roselle plant are edible? They can be eaten raw in salads or cooked as greens either on their own, or with other leafy vegetables and meat. The purple mangoesteen (Garcinia mangostana) is a tropical evergreen tree and native to Sunda Islands and the Moluccas of Indonesia. It grows mainly in Southeast Asia and tropical South American countries. The white flesh part of purple mangoesteen fruit is edible.

Mangoesteen showed weight loss and anti-obesity effects in human clinical studies. It also can be used for obesity, skin problems, wounds, dysentery, urinary tract infections, abdominal pain, diarrhea, suppuration and chronic ulcers. The crude ethanol extract of mangosteen pericarp (Garcinia mangostana) showed strong anti-skin cancer effect in two skin cancer cell lines, with potential as an anti-skin cancer agent. Limau Kasturi limes are extremely petite, averaging 25-35 millimeters in diameter, and are semi-rounded to ovate in shape. Upon harvest, they have a kelly green thin and porous peel, which releases floral aromatics and offers a surprisingly sweet taste. Their thinly segmented flesh is a lime green, fragrant, juicy and tart but less stringent than regular limes. When fully mature limes become yellow, similar to the color of lemons.
The Limau Kasturi lime, as it is known in Malaysia, is a hybrid citrus tree known for its tart juicy fruits. It is a cross between a sour, loose skinned mandarin and a kumquat, therefor technically making it an orangequat.
The juice of the Limau Katsuri is usually used to flavor foods in south-east Asian cuisine, as lemons or limes are used in the rest of the world. The pure juice is often pasteurized and bottles as a beverage or concentrate. The whole fruits may be preserved in jellies, jams or marmalades and used in sauces and custards as an exotic lemon curd alternative.

Sesbania grandiflora is a small erect, fast-growing plant.

The flowers, young leaves and tender pods of the white flowered Agati (Sesbania grandiflora var. grandiflora) are edible and are sold in local ethnic markets.
They are prepared by blanching in boiling water for less than a minute or may be dipped in batter and fried in butter. The flowers are eaten as vegetables alone or mixed into curries or salads. The red flowers of Sesbania grandiflora var. coccinea are also eaten but are considered bitter and not as widely eaten as the white flowered variety in Hawai`i.
All parts of Sesbania grandiflora are utilized for medicine in Southeastern Asia and India including preparations derived from the roots, bark, gum, leaves, flowers, and fruit.
In a number of cultures the root is applied as a poultice for application to inflammation and fever. Powdered roots of Sesbania grandiflora var. coccinea are mixed in water and applied externally as a poultice or rub to rheumatic swellings. The bark is considered astringent and is utilized for the treatment of smallpox, in the Philippines for the treatment of ulcers in the mouth and alimentary canal, in Java, for the treatment of thrush and infantile disorders of the stomach, and in Cambodia the pounded bark is applied to scabies. The juice of the leaves is considered anthelmintic and tonic and is used to treat worms, biliousness, fever, gout, and itchiness, and leprosy. Malayans apply crushed leaves to sprains and bruises. In Ayurvedic medicine the leaves are utilized for the treatment of epileptic fits and clinical research supports the anticonvulsive activity of Agati leaves.
